How to dispose of waste oil in a legally correct way
By Dennis Wanders · Strategic Advisor · 6 min read · June 2026
Waste oil is a hazardous substance. That means you cannot simply dispose of it: strict rules apply to storage, transport and processing. In this article you will read what the obligations are and how to make sure your records are in order.
Why waste oil is subject to special rules
Waste oil can contain heavy metals, solvents and other contaminants that are harmful to soil and water. That is why oil is classified as hazardous waste and only a registered collector may collect and dispose of it. Incorrect disposal can lead to fines and environmental damage for which your company is liable.
The right documentation: the waste accompaniment note
Every transport of hazardous waste must be accompanied by a waste accompaniment note. This states, among other things, the waste stream, the quantity, the origin and the destination. This document is your proof that the waste has been correctly disposed of and processed. Keep these documents carefully — during an inspection or audit you must be able to demonstrate that the chain is sound.
Only a VIHB-registered collector
The collection and transport of waste oil may only be carried out by a party listed on the VIHB list (Transporters, Collectors, Dealers and Brokers of waste). Always check that your waste partner is registered — IAM is. That way you can be sure the disposal is legally valid.
In short
- Waste oil is hazardous waste and is subject to strict disposal rules.
- Every transport requires a waste accompaniment note — keep it carefully.
- Only a VIHB-registered collector may collect the oil.
- Correct disposal protects you against fines and liability.
