Waste rules in the food industry

Food producers face strict requirements around hygiene and waste alike. The Environmental Management Act obliges businesses to separate waste streams at the source where reasonably possible, and LAP3 sets a minimum processing standard per stream. Animal by-products and swill are also covered by separate European rules with approved processing routes. IAM helps you determine the right route per stream and records it in watertight administration.

Swill and animal residual streams fall under Regulation (EC) 1069/2009 and may only be processed via approved processors.

Registration & retention

Every waste removal should be documented; consignment notes for hazardous waste must be kept for at least five years.

Used frying fat is a valuable feedstock for biofuel. It is collected separately and recycled to a high grade — depending on quality and volume, compensation may be possible.

Does organic waste have to be collected separately?

Yes. Organic residual streams offered separately are easier to process (digestion or composting) and lower the cost of your residual waste.

How are production peaks accommodated?

The collection schedule is aligned with your production. During seasonal peaks we temporarily scale up the frequency or the number of containers.

Can IAM also handle wastewater from the food industry?

Yes. Rinse and process water with organic load or fats is pumped on site and taken to a certified water processor, including a consignment note.

How do I lower the waste costs of my production site?

By separating better at the source. Organic waste, film, cardboard and fats kept apart are cheaper to process than mixed residual waste — and streams such as frying fat and cardboard even earn money.
