Laws & regulations

MARPOL and port rules

Under the MARPOL convention, seagoing vessels must deliver their ship waste to port reception facilities before departure. Oily streams such as bilge water and slops fall under Annex I, garbage under Annex V. Delivery must be notified in advance and fully documented. Inland shipping is governed by the ADN. IAM arranges MARPOL-compliant collection — from IJmuiden, right at the port.

Delivery obligation (MARPOL)

Vessels must deliver ship waste before departure; ports levy an indirect waste fee. Evasion leads to inspections and fines.

Notification & S-form

Delivery is notified in advance and recorded. A complete delivery receipt protects owner and agent during port-state inspections.

ADN for inland shipping

Hazardous goods on inland waterways are governed by the ADN. IAM is ADR- and ADN-authorised for wet and dry transport legs.

From IJmuiden, right on the North Sea Canal, we serve sea and inland shipping with short response times. After your notification we align collection with the berth time, pump bilge water and slops with our own tank capacity and supply the delivery receipt for your MARPOL administration. For owners and agents with fixed liner services we work with recurring arrangements per call.

Frequently asked questions

Which ship waste does IAM collect?

Bilge water, slops, sludge, oil-containing residues, ship chemicals and sewage water — collected MARPOL-categorised at the quay in IJmuiden and other Dutch ports.

Does IAM work MARPOL-compliantly?

Yes. We collect ship waste in line with the MARPOL convention and provide the correct MARPOL and accompaniment documentation, so the chain is demonstrable and audit-proof.

Can IAM collect in the port of IJmuiden?

Yes. Our location is right next to the Port of IJmuiden, so we can collect quickly and flexibly — and in other ports throughout the Netherlands too.

Which parties does IAM serve in the port?

For terminals, shipping companies, ship agents and bunker firms. We align collection with arrival times and quay accessibility.

Which streams fall under MARPOL Annex I?

Oily mixtures such as bilge water, sludge and slops from the engine room and cargo residues from oil tankers.

How quickly can delivery be arranged?

After notification we align collection with your berth time. From IJmuiden we act fast — outside office hours by arrangement.

Does IAM operate in all Dutch ports?

Our home base is IJmuiden, right on the North Sea Canal, and through our network we serve ports across the Netherlands.

Do you also handle cargo residues and tank-washing water?

Yes. We take over slops, cargo residues and washing water by tanker and deliver them to certified processors, with full delivery documentation.

What does ship-waste delivery cost?

Seaports use an indirect waste fee covering a basic delivery; beyond that, rates apply per cubic metre or tonne depending on the stream. Bilge water and slops by tanker are usually cheapest with a pre-notified, planned delivery. We quote per call or per liner service with fixed arrangements.
